Single vision lenses are the cheapest and most common type of eyeglass lenses. They have the largest field of vision because they only correct vision at one specific distance (either far or near). If you are nearsighted or farsighted, or have astigmatism, you’ll most likely be prescribed single vision lenses.
Bifocal lenses are multifocal, meaning they have two different ”powers” in them-these different sections of the lens correct distance vision and near vision. Bifocal lenses prescribed for people with multiple vision problems, such as presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) and myopia (nearsightedness).
Trifocal lenses are similar to bifocals, except that they have an additional power to correct intermediate vision. The intermediate portion may be used to view a computer screen, for example. The main shortcoming of bifocals and trifocals is that they a distinct line between each field of vision, this makes the sections of the lens produce drastically different vision. Most people get used to this and don’t have an issue, but this drawback has led to the development of more advanced lenses, such as progressives.
Non-Prescription Glasses
Non-prescription glasses serve a variety of functions, including preventative eye care, safety and fashion. They include Reading Glasses, which improve your ability to see things up close, especially when reading books, newspapers, laptops and phone screens. Digital Protection (Blue Light Blocking) prevent digital eye strain and help improve your sleep schedule, they are also called computer glasses. Sunglasses can be acquired without a prescription, they have polarized lenses, UV protection treatment. Lastly, Fake glasses (non-prescription) are mainly used as fashion accessories, but they may also serve as safety glasses in certain low-risk situations.
Choosing a Frame
While lenses are prescribed to you by the doctor, patients do, however, have the liberty to choose a frame that suits them. The most important aspect to consider when choosing a frame is the shape of your face and skin tone. Eye colors are usually a secondary element in determining your frame color. Once you have determined if you are ”warm” or ”cool”, then you can find the eyeglass frame colors that will suit you the best.
There are two main types of material used to make glasses frames namely: Plastic and metal frames. Plastic frames are great because they come in many different colors, are hypoallergenic and cost less. However, they are less durable and the colors fade real quick. Because the material used to make metal frames differs, the price also varies, can cost the same as plastic glasses or reach double to triple the price. Metal glasses are durable, lightweight and corrosion-resistant. Unfortunately, metal glasses can have negative skin reactions and have fewer colors to choose from.
Types of lenses
Lenses come in glass, for excellent visual acuity. Plastic lenses produce the same results as glass lenses but they are cheaper, lighter and safer to use. High-index plastic lenses are even thinner and lighter than most plastic lenses, and Aspheric lenses are flatter and way thinner, which makes them a great choice for stronger prescriptions that need thicker lenses.
