If you’re looking to protect your eyes, medical experts highly recommend wearing sunglasses that block ultraviolet radiation (UV) as it can cause serious eye problems. Their usage are mandatory especially after some surgical procedures and are recommended for a certain time period in dusty areas, when leaving a room going into the daylight and in front of a TV or computer monitor.

Fashion trends is another reason why people opt for sunglasses. Sunglasses of particular shapes may be used as fashion accessory, but you still will be protecting the eyes one way or another. People also wear sunglasses to hide an abnormal appearance of their eyes such as blindness, to avoid making others uncomfortable. Sunglasses can be useful to hide dilated or contracted pupils and other people use them to hide bloodshot eyes due to drug abuse, chronic dark circles, a cataract or eyes which jerk uncontrollably.

Sunglasses can be worn to hide one’s eyes and make eye contact impossible, which can be a relief to those who are shy. People also use sunglasses to hide emotions and seem mysterious by using mirrored sunglasses. In all cases, hiding one’s eyes has implications of non-verbal communication, which can be an advantage in various situations.

Variants

Sunglasses vary in terms of appearance, size and shade. Clip-ons are a form of tinted glasses that can be clipped on eyeglasses for protection from the sun, flip-up glasses can be an alternative. Flip-up sunglasses add the benefit of sunglasses to corrective eyeglasses, allowing the wearer to flip up the tinted lenses for indoor use.

Gradient lenses go from a darker shade at the top to a lighter one at the bottom. The idea is to protect more from sunlight the higher one looks through the lens, the less protection is offered the lower one looks through the lens. Mirrored glasses have a metallic, partially reflective coating on the outer surface, in combination with tinted glass lens. Mirrored lenses of different colors can expand the range of fashion styles.

Different types of Sunlight

While the sun has different rays, the most harmful to our eyes are ultra-violet (UV) rays. These are classified into UVA and UVB, the two basic types of sunlight that reach earth’s surface. Sunglasses are designed to reflect both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent than any other type of light, and account for 95% of UV radiation.

UVB rays are more prevalent at higher altitudes and can even penetrate on cloudy days. They are the ones responsible for painful sunburns.

Visible light is what gives objects color. This type of light is not filtered by sunglasses and does not pose health risks.

  • Ultraviolet light- with wavelengths shorter than 0.4 micrometre.
  • Infrared radiation- with wavelengths longer than 0.8 micrometre.
  • Visible light- with wavelengths between 0.4 and 0.8 micrometre.

Shopping for Sunglasses

When shopping for sunglasses, you should look for lenses that block 100% of UV rays. It is of paramount importance to note that not all lenses block 100% of radiation. Consider large lenses or a close-fitting style of sunglasses to safeguard the skin around your eyes, for extra UV protection.
